Emily Dubois hails from small-town Langbank, Saskatchewan, currently living in Regina.
Emily’s affection for the fiddle started early; regularly attending youth fiddle camps like the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party, she was exposed to fiddling styles from a variety of notable Canadian players such as JJ Guy, Gordon Stobbe, Ivonne Hernandez, Shane Cook, John Arcand, Calvin Vollrath, Karrnnel Sawitsky, Stephanie Labbé, Troy MacGillivray, Tim Chaisson, Mairi Rankin, and Liz Carroll. Over a ten-year span, fiddle-camps and their community nurtured Emily’s passion for collaboration, performance, and her own evolution to mentoring and teaching young fiddlers.
A significant connection was made early with Vancouver Island’s own Ivonne Hernandez, and followed her to Victoria to further her own growth as a player, performer, and instructor, working alongside Hernandez in a variety of projects. In her shift from flatland to island, Emily then completed a diploma in Camosun's Contemporary Music Performance under Daniel Lapp, competed in the 2019 Canadian Grand Masters, and graduated from Capilano University with a certificate in Arts and Entertainment Management. Emily continued to explore her own career in musical performance and education and taught privately out of Long & McQuade, the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and Vancouver's Open Door Music Studio. She additionally worked administration for the North Shore Celtic Ensemble and the Serena Eades Academy of Music from 2022-2024.
In the Summer of 2023, Emily moved back to Saskatchewan, to Regina. It is here where the Flatland Fiddling Studio was finally able to come to fruition, and is in the midst of its third year. She is committed to her own role in the rich tradition of Canadian fiddling, and is beyond excited be back in the SK fiddling scene and to do her part to sustain it!
You can find her fiddling around town with her sister Zoe on guitar, or as part of the group Hotdog! Bluegrass. When she isn't teaching at home, she loves instructing at fiddle camps such as Shivering Strings, FiddlyNess, and the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party. In the past few years, she has also worked hard to represent Saskatchewan as a competitor the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship that happens annually around Canada. This year, she will be competing for her 4th time, (her 3rd time representing SK) in High River, Alberta on August 29th.
Lastly, Emily has been working away at her debut EP “Sounds Like Home”, featuring the talents of Tom Gammons on guitar, Ray Knorr on fiddle, and Tuli Porcher on cello, and is excited to be able to share it on all services where music is streamed!
